London Symphony Orchestra – Nash Ensemble: War’s Embers

Print

When: 9th November

Where: LSO St Luke’s

Info: Almost 100 years since the Armistice of 1918, the Nash Ensemble presents a portrait of post-war society by four rarely performed British composers.

One composer killed in action, one wounded, one unable to serve and a female composer fighting for recognition – this is Britain in 1918 from all perspectives.

Unable to serve due to ill health, Bax was still deeply troubled by unfolding events. His 1916 trio is a true expression of feeling, exploiting the mellow tones of harp, flute and viola, while Butterworth’s song cycle is bittersweet, reminiscent of the English countryside that he was never to see again.
