One of the world’s leading viola players performs emotive 19th-century chamber music by Brahms.

On his acclaimed Brahms recordings, Lawrence Power’s playing is described by The Guardian as ‘full of imagination, sensitivity and gorgeously ample phrasing’.

He performs Brahms’ viola and violin sonatas with Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov, who in 2012 won one of the world’s most prestigious piano prizes, the Honens International Piano Competition and makes his International Piano Series debut at Southbank Centre this season.

Brahms loved the sonorous sounds of the viola, and shortly after submitting a series of clarinet sonatas to his publisher, he offered versions written for viola to be published at the same time.

The composer’s three violin sonatas, written between 1878 and 1886, are seductively lyrical, from the G major with its famous ‘raindrop’ final movement to the complex, eerie D minor.
